5 Ways We Can Get Better With Age

Seniors_fun_beach-LR.jpgWhen people think about getting older, we tend to look at the downsides. We think about how our muscles and joints erode, or how we can lose our hearing, our eyesight, or other senses. We think about diseases that affect the elderly. What we don't often think about, though, are the advantages that come with age. The things we can look forward to, and which we should cultivate.

1: We Can Be Mentors

It takes thousands of hours of practice to truly master something. Even if you have real talent, it has to be honed through constant repetition. Those of us who've had a passion our whole lives have mastered the little tricks people just starting out don't even know about. So whether it's wood carving, playing piano, knitting, or something else entirely, being older means you've clocked the time to become a mentor.

2: You Know How To Be More Social

Have you ever noticed that a lot of seniors tend to be really friendly? That isn't because getting older gives you a sunny disposition, but rather it's because you've figured out the ins and outs of social interaction. You've spent your whole life talking to people, and even if you didn't spend your life in sales, you know what responses garner what reactions. Again, experience has its upsides.

3: You Have Wisdom to Share

You know when you were younger, and you needed advice? Who did you go to? For a lot of us it was an older sibling, or a parent, but many of us went to our grandparents because we knew they had wisdom. When you become the elder, you now have the ability to take people by the hand, and point out how they can avoid the mistakes you made.

4: You Never Pay Full Price (For Anything)

The number of places with senior discounts is ridiculous. So, while many seniors are retired, and living on a fixed income, it's possible to push that money a little further thanks to discounts at the movies, restaurants, and from nearly anywhere else you go.

5: You Can Reach Out To Your Family

When you're younger, keeping in touch with your family can seem hard. There's always a business conference, or family vacation, or big game that means you have to stay where you are. When you get older, though, you have the freedom to keep up with your loved ones. Whether it's hosting holiday gatherings, or taking a trip out to see the next generation, and do your part to stay connected to those you love. Even better, thanks to all your wisdom and experience, you'll be able to smooth over problems, and help bring everyone together.
